(voting offering, voting deposit - a gift deposited in churches or places of pilgrimage as a token of gratitude for, among other things, listening to prayers. Such offerings are often objects associated with a specific intention of a prayer, such as crutches, boat models, body parts castings, rosaries etc.)
In my artistic practice, I analysed issues related to the broadly defined concept of identity, its formation in the process of remembering, site-specific activities, and in the perspective of interpersonal relations on the level of family and on the level of society, e.g. in cultivated traditions. In this context, the institution of museum, its role in creating collections and its potential to shape social consciousness has become an area of interest for me.
"Art reflects the time" — a sublime, ideological and at the same time simple sentence of Nina Simone, a black singer, social activist who talks about the responsibility of all artists - is still valid. "Reflection of time", this time I am particularly interested in the context of museum collections, art collections stored in institutions, playing a significant culture-forming role in a given region.
The piece presented by me is the result of the work with the collection of the National Museum in Cracow, the oldest national museum in Poland. The composition, which brings to mind an ornate carpet, was created out of exhibits selected from the Museum's military, crafts and fabrics storerooms by deliberately juxtaposing those carriers of symbolic meanings to provoke reflection on their role in the constitution of contemporary identity.
I made Hundreds of photographs of exhibits to later assemble and combine them, gradually creating a new work. From a distance, the pattern is associated with a Persian rug, referring in this way to the passion of the Polish nobility to the art of the Middle East.
The carpet becomes a symbolic cross-section reflecting the entire history of the region, entangled in partitions, wars and various religious influences. At the same time, appeals to the universal truth about the heritage filled with violence through the use national and religious symbols, thus suggesting that often attitudes of patriotism and faith can be transposed into nationalism and religious fanaticism.
