Images of the Unseen — Lens on the Migrant Crisis (cooperation with Omar Marques)
Between 2015 and 2017, Omar Marques documented the migrant crisis by photographing legal and illegal refugee camps in Serbia, Greece, Austria and Hungary, meeting hundreds of people who fled war in places of apparent refuge. Out of thousands of photographs, Omar, in collaboration with artist Natalia Wiernik, selected a few dozen images that contrasted with typical reportage photographs. The images were modified, contra the rules of traditional photojournalism — the people photographed were erased from them. The distorted reportage can take the viewer into a different sphere of contemplation — it leaves us only with the traces of the people. In this way, photography reveals and brings to the fore the issue of the presence and simultaneous absence of the many refugees from the Middle East, who are in Europe next to us but mostly marginalized.
